Blind's journey to Ajax stardom began with a transfer from Sparta Rotterdam in July 1986, attracted by manager Johan Cruyff. This move initially upset superstar Marco van Basten, who questioned the signing of a relatively unknown defensive player over a high-profile name. Blind silenced critics immediately, amassing an impressive trophy list including five Eredivisie Championships and four national cups. His peak came in 1995 when he scored the winning penalty against Brazil's Grêmio in the Intercontinental Cup final. Later that year, he converted two penalties (in the 65th and 69th minutes) to help secure a 5-1 aggregate victory over Real Zaragoza in the European Super Cup final.

On 29 August 1979, Blind made his professional debut with Sparta Rotterdam, spending seven seasons there before moving to Ajax. While he missed the triumphant UEFA Euro 1988 squad due to a lack of caps in 1987 and 1988, he redeemed himself internationally by representing the Netherlands at the 1990 and 1994 World Cups and the 1996 European Championships. His international goal tally stands at one, scored against Greece during a UEFA Euro 1992 qualifier. Blind retired from playing on 16 May 1999 after establishing himself as a dependable leader who started his career on the right flank before dominating as a centre back.

He later shifted to assistant coach under Martin Jol and then technical director for the 2011–12 season, resigning on 9 February 2012 following a dispute with the board. In his final managerial chapter, he replaced Guus Hiddink as Netherlands head coach on 1 July 2015 but was sacked on 26 March 2017 after failing to qualify for Euro 2016 and struggling in World Cup qualifiers.
